Booklist Reviews
Senior delivers a colorful, unicorn-packed picture book that will delight those young readers with a yen for fantastic creatures. Amy had her Saturday morning all planned out. She'd made the poster for the first meeting of the Unicorn Club, prepped the craft supplies, stocked the snacks, and queued up her music. Now, all she needs are for her friends to arrive. The brown-skinned girl wriggles with impatient excitement, but as the clock ticks ever closer to the appointed time, her enthusiasm turns to disappointment: no one has shown up for her meeting. Devastated, she heads to her tree house, only to find it packed with unicorns! Amy proceeds to have the best day ever with her new hooved friends. Illustrator Martin brings every color of the rainbow to the page in full, vibrant force, creating a whimsical romp for readers (the dance-party scene is glorious!). The full-page illustrations are great for group or one-on-one sharing, and the sweet, upbeat story will put a smile on kids' faces. Pair with cupcakes and glitter, if possible. Grades K-2. Publishers Weekly Reviews
A girl named Amy, who is starting a unicorn fan club, proudly hangs up a sign advertising it ("in shiny pink pen") on her front gate. Many readers will relate to her disappointment when no one shows up. But as she approaches her tree house, she finds that it's full of attendees—and they're all enthusiastic, brightly colored unicorns with square snouts, alert eyes, and round tummies and backsides. Circumstances quickly turn around as Amy and the unicorns engage in arts and crafts ("They stomped and they sparkled on huge sheets of paper"), have snacks, and enjoy a unicorn dance party. Senior's lines can be a bit stale ("?‘UNICORNS? Really?' gasped Amy, astounded") and a little corny ("It's time for some dancing, with ribbons to win for the funkiest moves"), but for readers enamored of unicorns, Amy's magical day is a dream come true. Ages 5–6. (Sept.)
