A brief biography of the last queen of Hawaii, whose love of her country led her to write its anthem, "Aloha Oe," and to work to preserve Hawaiian customs. - (Baker & Taylor)

This concise overview is as much a history of Hawaii as it is a biography of Queen Liliuokalani. Guzzetti recounts the events of Lydia's (later Queen Liliuokalani) life, but intersperses bits of Hawaiian tradition and lore along the way. Full-color and black-and-white photographs and reproductions are attractive and informative, though not particularly eye-catching. It is doubtful that readers will have much luck with the list for further reading; the most recent title about Queen Liliuokalani included has a 1975 publication date. But overall, as much for its emphasis on Hawaiian history as for its focus on a fascinating woman, this book is a useful addition to libraries. Copyright 1998 School Library Journal Reviews
