Horn Book Guide Reviews
Though the two pages about beliefs are too general, overall this book provides good background information about Native American art and culture. The descriptions of carvings, textiles, clothing, and hairstyles include tribes from different regions. There is also a chapter on songs, ceremonies, and dances. The striking photos of artwork are stronger than the text. Reading list. Glos., ind. Copyright 2005 Horn Book Guide Reviews.
School Library Journal Reviews
Gr 5-8-January investigates the many art forms of the Native American tribes, and the book is divided accordingly. Chapters are dedicated to pottery, textiles, carving, and painting as well as body art, architecture, ceremonies, songs, and dances. Each type of art is discussed in general terms, and examples are given of different tribes' development or interpretation of that art form. A list of Native American museums throughout the United States is appended. Numerous color photographs of both ancient and modern artwork are included on each spread, and they are exceptional. Captions are provided for each vivid picture to explain its connection to the text. This fresh look at Native American culture through its artwork will be a welcome alternative for reports and classroom discussion, and the popularity of the subject matter and appealing design will attract readers outside the classroom environment.-Heather E.
